Brief discription of a rube goldberg A rube goldberg is a complex contraption that performs simple tasks. The requirements for a rube goldberg in our class was that it must fit in a space of a 2ft x 2ft x 3ft and that the contraption must be started with one action and continue throughout the rube in a reasonable amount of time. In my group we chose to make hot chocolate because the exhibition was right around the christmas time. First the rube starts out at the top where we put a marble on a ramp and it falls into a hole and drops. Then the marble falls into a cup where the pulley lowers the cup causing the pengilum to swing. Once the pendulum swings it hits a car that knocks down a line of dominos. The last domino that falls has a weight glued to the domino and when the domino falls it hits a string that snaps and hits a stack of blocks. Then the top block has a string attached to it, so when the block falls it lifts up the other side of the pulley which will release the ball. The ball will role into a block and hits the string causing the cup to pour hot chocolate into the cup. When it came to exhibition time we started presenting our rube to people. Overall the rube worked way better than we thought, almost everytime it worked, sometimes it had a minor flaws but it worked great. The flow of energy within the rube is in some places good but some parts of the rube are a little non sufficient. It didn't work the whole input so we added more on the way to make it work. The one step that was a challenge to make it work was our pulley. The pulley wouldnt work cause the cup was unbalanced and the spot was off. To fix it we used a stick with some wire to hold the cup in place for the ball to fall into the cup. The contribution I made to my group was sometimes building and sometimes putting ideas out to add on to our rube. Mostly we split up the work so we where all doing a little bit of each.
Life In the Cold
1. For our experiment we decided to test what homemade fire starters work the best in a cold environment. What I loved about this project was not just because we got to lite stuff on fire but we get so much freedom to choose what we were interested in. My role in my group was to take pictures for our write up to give a visual of our steps. I also typed the methods and materials of our write up.
